Squiddies Flip Reel Review

By: Blake Ahlgrim

I have been fishing since before I can remember. My main attention typically goes to bass and catfish. A man by the name of Maimonides once said, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Although this quote was not directly meant to be limited to fishing, it couldn’t be more true! Knowing how to fish has saved countless lives. The main struggle is always being prepared.

Whenever I go backpacking, I make sure that I have my pole. The struggle is finding a place to put it. When taking just a simple rod and reel, I find it difficult to keep it in my pack so I just strap it to the outside. I do have a collapsible pole, even though it does shrink it is still an awkward shape with the reel still protruding. Squiddies has come out with an innovative and creative product. It’s called the Flip Reel. This by far has been the most practical and most transportable fishing device. My first time using the Flip Reel, I was skeptical upon first sight. But not five minutes in, I was wildly impressed! It did take some time to get used to casting the line, but it is easy to catch on to the feel of it.

The Flip Reel is small, versatile, and not once did the line get tangled. You reel in the same way you would if you were fly fishing; meaning it is easier to get more realistic swim patterns from your bait. The Flip Reel fits comfortably in your hand and easily in your day pack or backpacking pack. It even includes a feature that stores your bait while still attached to the line, so you don’t have to take off your bait every time, unlike a fishing pole.

This product would be great for kids and would teach the need-to-know art of fishing. Overall, this product is a huge benefit for anyone who wants to bring fishing gear while hiking the trails, but doesn’t necessarily have the room for it. This is a must for the adventurous.

  1. Takes some time getting used to
  2. The fight for the fish is a tad more difficult than a regular pole because you don't have the same leverage

  1. Small and compact
  2. Easy to use
  3. Gives a different approach to fishing
