A Dolphin Watching and Snorkeling Adventure in Panama City Beach
We packed up early in the morning to head out on our Dolphin and Snorkel Tour with Captain Lorraine. We were excited and interested all at the same time because we weren't 100% sure of what to expect. We had seen a lot of pictures on the company's website, but we just weren't sure what type of experience we would find on our trip. We arrived at the marina right on time and connected with our captain at the dock. It was an easy first meeting and once we had made our introductions we jumped right on the boat.
We started our 3-hour tour by heading over to the bait boats to see if there were any dolphins there, with no luck. We then went out towards the open ocean and along the coast of the beautiful Shell Island. We sped through the waters along the beach for about 30 minutes with nothing jumping, but all of a sudden we spotted a dolphin from the bow of the boat. We saw it jump a few times and then it was gone, we hoped it wouldn't be the last we saw of it. We were close to shore and decided to jump out and snorkel a bit. It was a great experience to be snorkeling in such a beautiful sandy area where we saw so many fish and crabs. We even caught a crab to look at more closely. Captain Lorraine even explained what type of crab we caught and how to tell if it was a male or female.
After a bit of time spent there, we pulled up anchor and went back out to look for more dolphins. So far the trip was a great commingling of dolphin watching and snorkeling. Though it really wasn't a coral reef type snorkel, it was just about as beautiful! One of the coolest parts of the trip was how well Lorraine knew the area. She talked knowledgeably and passionately about the wildlife and the PCB area. She also worked well with the other boats and her other captain to coordinate where to find the dolphins.
Eventually, we were able to find a few and follow along with them. We even saw a mother and baby dolphin together which was just as awesome as it sounds. After a bit more watching, we found another stopping point and did some more snorkeling, this time, closer to the rocks on shore! It was an amazing experience with beautiful fish and dolphins to be seen. The adventure was capped off by another cruise by the bait boat where we came upon the bait guy feeding a dolphin with his old bait. It was so neat to see the dolphin so close and interactive and it was a great way to close the tour out.
We'd highly recommend Lorraine and her Dolphin and Snorkel Tours to anyone looking to get out and adventure around the Panama City Beach area. Click here to check out more and book your tour!
